304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel are common stainless steel materials in life, widely used in kitchen utensils, medical equipment and various containers. They are both corrosion-resistant, but there are some differences in composition, corrosion resistance and usage scenarios. The following are the main differences between the two:
1. Chemical composition
304 stainless steel: The main components are 18% chromium and 8% nickel, and it is also commonly known as 18-8 stainless steel.
316 stainless steel: In addition to chromium and nickel content, it also contains 2-3% molybdenum, which makes 316 better than 304 in corrosion resistance.
2. Corrosion resistance
304 stainless steel: Suitable for daily antioxidant needs, but relatively weak corrosion resistance in high salt or acidic environments. For kitchen utensils, drinking cups, etc. used in ordinary households, the corrosion resistance of 304 is sufficient.
316 stainless steel: Due to the addition of molybdenum, it has strong resistance to chloride ion and acid corrosion, and is more suitable for high-corrosion environments such as marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.
3. Cost
304 stainless steel: It is cheaper than 316 stainless steel, so it is widely used in general kitchen utensils, tableware and ordinary industrial utensils.
316 stainless steel: Because it contains molybdenum, the production cost is higher, so it is mostly used in equipment and environments with higher requirements.
4. Mechanical strength and antibacterial properties
304 stainless steel: It has good hardness and toughness, and is suitable for daily products such as thermos cups and kitchen utensils.
316 stainless steel: It has better mechanical strength under extreme conditions and slightly better antibacterial properties, especially suitable for medical devices and food industries.
5. Application scenarios
304 stainless steel: It is mostly used for household daily use, catering utensils, household appliances, low-corrosive industrial equipment, etc.
316 stainless steel: It is often found in high-salinity, acidic or high-temperature environments, such as ships, marine equipment, medical equipment, chemical equipment, etc.
Both 304 and 316 stainless steel provide excellent corrosion resistance and durability in daily life. If the product is used in a conventional environment, 304 stainless steel is sufficient to meet the needs; in a more corrosive environment or where higher hygiene requirements are required, 316 stainless steel will have more advantages.
